BMX racing emphasizes individual performance with a team spirit. BMX racing offers every rider the ability to participate at his/her own pace. No one sits on the bench. There are no coaches deciding who gets to play, every one gets in on the action. BMX racing fosters good sportsmanship, respect for others and their property, courage and determination. BMX racers range from 5-and-under classes to 55-and-older — so the whole family can race !

Let's begin by reassuring future BMX racers (and/or parents) about two important things:

BMX racing is no more dangerous than most team sports. Statistically, it is safer than nearly every traditional after-school activity or sport, with the possible exception of Drama Club. You will get a little bit scraped up, but in general the time you spend on a track will be safer than your time on the street.

BMX racing is not dirt cheap to do, but a sensible rider and his/her family can race a complete season for less money than nearly any other non-school-supported sport.

Read on to find out what you need to race and what to expect when you get to the races.

What equipment do I need to race BMX?

First and foremost, you obviously need a bike. You don't need an expensive, fancy bike to race, but BMX Canada requires that your bike must have:
  1. Handlebar grips that fully cover and enclose all metal and openings on the handlebar ends. Handlebars may not exceed 30" in width.
  2. Some form of operating braking system. A rear hand brake is best. A coaster or front hand brake is permitted but not recommended.
  3. All equipment must be safe and in good condition. Make sure bolts are tight and there are no broken welds or jagged exposures.
  4. Your bike must NOT have:
  5. Any kickstands, chain guards, fenders and reflector brackets.
  6. Any freestyle-type pegs.

We have a small fleet of BMX Race bikes of various sizes available to loan on a first-come-first-serve basis.

What gear do I need to wear to race BMX?

To participate in any of our sanctioned events, you must be wearing:

  1. Helmet with a permanent strap attached; snaps are not allowed. A full-face helmet.
  2. Long pants (waist to ankles). Shorts with shin and/or knee pads will be allowed at track operator discretion.
  3. Long-sleeved shirt
  4. Enclosed shoes
  5. Gloves (not required, but a good idea)
Now that you know what to expect and what gear you'll need, it's time to get a membership to try it out! Luckily, we offer Free One-Day BMX Canada and Cornwall BMX Club Memberships valid for any Local Single Point Race or Gate Practice (sorry they don't apply to our charity races). Just fill out the form in the link below and then sign up for your free Gate Practice or Race!
