In 2025, the BMX Hall of Fame board decided to induct four very special couples who have dedicated their lives to the Sport of BMX. To those who have played a vital part in their local BMX scene. Those who have had a HUGE role in their State race program, and sat on the board of the NBL, officiated or handled registration from the local to National level. In doing so, the HoF wanted to salute those couples who left HUGE impressions on multiple generations of BMX kids and their families. ... and Bruce "Mugs" Mulligan and his wife Betty are prime examples of all of the above.

For the past 44 years, the Mulligans have been volunteers at the World Famous Shoreham BMX in New York. “Muggs,” as Bruce was known, helped build the first track in Miller Place back in 1981 when it was sanctioned by the N-E-B-A. He then helped build and operate Shoreham BMX in 1982. Bruce was the track maintenance guy, regular gate starter, occasional referee …and cruiser racer.
Betty served as track clerk and on race days could always be found in registration and scoring. She also served as secretary on the board of Shoreham BMX, Empire State BMX and NBL’s Board of Directors for decades - and was the one who first introduced NBL’s successful Beginner class pilot program.
Bruce and Betty also volunteered at the Vans Triple Crown and X-Games, with Bruce as gate starter and Betty as line judge-slash-scorer. Throughout the years, Bruce officiated for the UCI Supercross series and multiple UCI Worlds. In fact, he even helped build the exhibition track for NBC’s Good Morning America show in 2008.

At Shoreham’s 40th Anniversary celebration in 2022, both Betty and Bruce were inducted into the Shoreham BMX Hall of Fame. Sadly, last year, we lost “Muggs” - but the Mulligan family’s contribution to the sport of BMX will never be forgotten.
