In light of recent media coverage and public discussion, USA BMX and the American Bicycle Association (ABA) are issuing a statement to clarify our position and reaffirm our organizational values.
We recognize that recent articles have caused confusion by associating the phrase "USA BMX" with Chelsea Wolfe. It is critical to distinguish that while the rider attended the Tokyo Olympics in the BMX Freestyle event, she did so as a member of the USA Cycling team. USA Cycling is the national governing body for Olympic cycling disciplines, including BMX Freestyle. USA BMX/ABA, while a proud partner in the development of athletes, is a separate, grassroots, family-oriented organization that sanctions BMX events across North America.
Ms. Wolfe, is not a registered member of USA BMX, and her personal statements do not, in any way, reflect the views, mission, or principles of our organization. Furthermore, Ms. Wolfe has not competed in a USA BMX freestyle event.
Our mission has always been to provide a safe, positive, and competitive environment for our members and their families. For nearly 50 years, the American Bicycle Association has been dedicated to creating a sport that fosters personal growth, good sportsmanship, and a strong sense of community. We are an organization built by families, for families, with a focus on creating a welcoming atmosphere where riders of all ages and skill levels can challenge themselves, build character, and forge lifelong friendships.
The statements and sentiments that have been portrayed are in direct opposition to these core values. USA BMX/ABA unequivocally does not condone any language that promotes violence, hatred, or division. Such rhetoric has no place in our sport or the communities we serve at our tracks nationwide.
We remain steadfast in our commitment to our members and to upholding the family-first values that have defined our organization for decades. We will continue to focus on growing the great sport of BMX racing and providing a world-class experience for every family who joins us at the track.
About USA BMX
Established as the American Bicycle Association in 1977 and headquartered in Tulsa, Oklahoma, ABA is the nation’s largest cycling organization with more than 70,000 members with combined racing and freestyle events at more than 300 sanctioned BMX tracks across the United States and Canada. ABA empowers and elevates the early stages of bicycle development by creating opportunities through facility development, programs, and national events. As a result, ABA has developed a structured blueprint. A cyclist can progress from humble beginnings on a balance bike to becoming a BMX Olympian by establishing these roots.
Through STEAM, scholarships, freestyle amateur events, the national series, the Olympics and new facilities built across the United States, these four pillars under the USA BMX organization will impact young riders and families: USA BMX Foundation, USA BMX Freestyle, USA BMX Racing and ABA Ethos.
