The Sport of BMX loses another Legend :: HARRY LEARY
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Harry Leary, a legendary and longtime BMX racer and esteemed Hall of Fame member. Harry died on Saturday, September 7th, 2024, from heat exhaustion in the Arizona desert. He was 65 years old.
.
Harry will forever be remembered for his style, speed and determination. His impact on the world of BMX racing, from when he first began racing in 1974 and competed nearly everyyear ever since, has been profound and enduring. His extraordinary talent and relentless dedication earned him a well-deserved place as a second-year Inductee into the BMX Hall of Fame in 1986, where his legacy will continue to inspire and uplift athletes and BMX enthusiasts alike.
.
Not only known for his impressive skills on the track, while representing brands such as JMC Racing and Diamondback, Harry will also be remembered for his contributions to the BMX industry, while working for Western States Imports, Balance and Marzocchi, as well as founding his own brand - Dirtwerx, in the late 90's. Leary's legacy also includes being a BMX track operator in Ontario, CA and Kingman, AZ., and a faithful worship leader on Sunday's Church in the Dirt services on the National circuit.
.
Harry leaves behind his beloved mother, Beverly Blodgett, his sisters Linda Taylor and Cammie Laster; and his cherished daughter, Breyana. During this time of mourning, the family asks for privacy and requests that the BMX community give them space to grieve the loss of a remarkable man.
.
At this moment, there are no public plans for a service. The family will provide updates as they are available. In lieu of flowers or condolences, those who wish to honor Harry’s memory are encouraged to cherish the spirit of the sport he loved and to extend acts of kindness in his name.
.
Harry Leary's legacy will forever be remembered through the lives he touched, the tracks and trails he blazed, and the hearts that he inspired.
Rest in peace, Harry. Your passion and dedication for our sport will be deeply missed.
