Proud BMX Dad who raced NBL in 1982 - 1984. Hometrack was outside of Denver Colorado @ The Adams County Fairgrounds.
In 2017 I found out about USABMX on accident while talking with "Big Rig Bill Davis", who commented, "my son races BMX not far from here", and I replied with enthusiasm!, "What? I raced BMX in the 1980's"and he replied, "I did too".
Next thing I know about 45 minutes had passed by and he had shown me pictures of his son and his bike and we swapped tales about the old days. When he left I had enough information to find Katy BMX and USABMX, and could not wait to introduce my son to BMX, that was early July 2017.
I went home and started searching for a BMX Race Bike online and found him a Standard Junior that I thought was a great bike, as it was 15.5 Pounds. Please keep in mind that in the 1980's anything under 20 pounds was EPIC! I pulled the trigger and paid express delivery and the bike was delivered in time to make the weekend (Sunday/ Finday) race at Katy BMX.
I was warmly welcomed by the USABMX Community and the only thing that threw me off was how few Motos there were, then I thought about it and realized that Digitial Devices are keeping kids indoors all too often.
Any given race day there were never less than 100 Motos at a local event. Living in Denver I chose BMX over snow skiing, as we could race all winter long indoors NBL and then ABA outdoors in the summer.
When I was a kid BMX was IT! Having a good bike and being a good rider was the fastest way to climb the social ladder at my school. Don't get me wrong, I also played every sport possible as did my friends, however whenever we could we were riding BMX and just hanging out.
When my son started racing he raced one week in the 7 Novice Class, and then his birthday came on July 08th and he moved up to 8 Novice. When he was 9 years old he turned intermediate. Last year he was Texas State #8 for his class. I was so proud of him.
We love USABMX and the BMX Community, I have no idea how many miles I have driven to attend events, just that there is no place we would rather be than at a USABMX Track with the USABMX Community.............. Amen!
