BMX Racing is an individual sport. Everyone rides, every time, regardless of how proficient or inexperienced. That is one of the key benefits most new families list when asked why they like the sport. “Nobody Rides the Bench in BMX Racing.”

The League allows new families to learn how the sport works, and riders to progress gradually, riding only with other beginners. At this level, the focus is on fun, developing bike handling skills, spending quality family time, and meeting new friends.

Each five-week League season includes both instruction and racing, as well as a league jersey, end-of-season award and end of season pizza party. Tri-City BMX offers loaner bikes and helmets as part of the registration fee.

Riders are encouraged to participate in a League seasons before graduating up to the “open racing” program at the track.

League Racing FAQ's

Tell me how BMX Racing is a “family sport?”
BMX Racing is the ultimate family sport because it encourages all members of the family to come out to the track and cheer-on their racer. It is not uncommon to see three generations and extended family out at the track. Families come together at the BMX track in a way they don’t with most other sports.

What’s the difference between the BMX Racing Beginner League program and the normal racing at our track?
There are two main differences between the League program and the normal “Open Racing” program:
1). The League program is strictly beginners-only. Existing racers are not eligible to participate.
2). In League racing, you sign up for a five-week “season” which includes five practice sessions and five races on scheduled dates and times. Open racing is “show up to sign up,” which you can do any time.

What equipment does my rider need to participate?
Starting out, on day one, all you need is long sleeves, long pants and a bike without reflectors, chainguard and pegs. If you have some gloves around the house, bring them too.

My rider has a USA BMX membership, can s/he participate in the League?
At this point, the League is only for beginning riders, so if you have an existing USA BMX Membership, or have had an active membership in the last five years, you are not eligible for participating in the League.

We don’t have a bike. Can we still participate?
We have a limited number of loaner bikes at the track. Please contact Sarah Robichaud to inquire about the availability of loaner bikes.

We don’t have a helmet, can we still participate?
We have a limited number of loaner helmets at the track as well. Please contact Sarah Robichaud to inquire about the availability of loaner helmets.

How does the League work?
One entry fee enters you or your rider in five weeks of scheduled BMX Racing activities. There is usually one practice and one racing session per week, though some programs combine the racing and practice into one session, with a 30-minute break between the sessions.

My rider can’t ride a two-wheeler yet, can s/he still be part of the league.
Tri-City BMX has a “Strider” program for budding riders who are not yet riding a pedal bike. The Strider balance bike is the best way to learn how to ride a bike–no training wheels required. Contact us to ask about their Strider program.

What if we have to miss one or more of the sessions?
If you have to miss a session, please contact Sarah Robichaud to make her aware you will not be coming. Be advised that missing sessions will likely impact your end-of-season points, and that there are no “make-up” sessions.

What awards will the riders receive?
Riders earn league season points for each lap they race. Specific awards vary on a League-by-League basis, but generally there is a “podium award” for the top three riders (by points) in each racing class. Those not in the top three will receive a “Personal Progression Award” to recognize the work they put in over the five weeks of the League season.

Each rider works hard to progress at his/her own pace. We feel that needs to be rewarded. It is important to make the distinction between this “progression” award and a “participation trophy” some sports give, just for enrolling.
