In case you have not noticed it yet, while the calendar may say its still the end of Spring in the RVA, but the temperatures tell us a whole different story. Summer is here and boy is it a hot one so far!! BMX racing is an outdoor sport here in the RVA and that means we must be prepared for whatever mother nature gives us. And while rain may have the ability to stop us from racing at Richmond BMX, the heat does not. We just need to be sure to take all the necessary precautions to ensure we have a fun and safe time at the track.

When racing OR practicing in the heat it is important to be hydrated BEFORE you being the activities on the track. Waiting until you are thirsty in the hot summer sun usually means you are already becoming dehydrated, and "catching up" on hydration is typically an endless battle and you never truly "catch up" while continuing to ride.

So, to be sure you are properly hydrated, be sure to increase you fluid intake as much as 24 hours before you are to begin your activity. This means getting your minimum 64 oz of water each day PLUS some addition water intake in the hours leading up to your riding session. Then during the session, take regular breaks getting shade, using a damp towel if needed and drinking more fluids. The key to not getting dehydrated and/or overheated is to increase the length AND frequency of breaks as the temperature rises.

Stay hydrated and you are sure to power through these hot months and even learn to use the heat to your advantage over the competition.
