Englishman Liam Phillips became the first rider to win consecutive men’s UCI BMX Supercross World Cups when he claimed the championship Saturday night at Novant Health BMX Supercross Track in Rock Hill.

Phillips finished sixth in mucky conditions in Rock Hill but had already accrued enough points with wins in three of the previous four legs of the World Cup. He was joined on the champions’ podium by Colombian Mariana Pajon, who took the women’s championship.

Wide credit was given to the Novant Health BMX Supercross track crew for maintaining the course in difficult conditions. Having concrete portions of the track also helped.

Latvia’s Maris Strombergs slogged through the damp conditions and won the Rock Hill stage for the men, edging Canadian Tory Nyhaug. American Connor Fields placed third on home soil, followed by Amidou Mir (France) and Anthony Dean (Australia). Niek Kimmann, from The Netherlands, set a track record with a 34.100-second lap during time trials.

Pajon closed out her World Cup circuit with the win in Rock Hill, edging Venezuala’s Stefany Hernandez by a few fractions of a point. The Netherlands’ Laura Smulders placed third, Denmark’s Simone Christensen fourth and American Brooke Crain rounded out the top-five. Fellow American Alise Post entered the event second in the overall standings, but finished eighth.

Pajon told BMXlive.com, “It's just unbelievable, I wanted to win this one and it feels so good I did it. I'm super happy and will celebrate tonight with all the Colombians who made the trip to Rock Hill.”

Underscoring her dominance, Pajon also claimed the time trial title with a 34.511 lap.
