Cycling BC, the governing body for cycling sport in British Columbia, and BMX Canada, the Canadian affiliate of the American Bicycle Association, are excited to announce a new partnership aimed at uniting and strengthening the sport of BMX racing in British Columbia.

The partnership will create opportunities for athletes and BMX tracks to share knowledge, grow their events, and participate in athlete and coach development programs. All BMX tracks in British Columbia are now invited to affiliate with both BMX Canada and Cycling BC, allowing them to access the benefits offered by both organizations.

Affiliation and membership with Cycling BC provides tracks with benefits, including access to funding opportunities and grants from viaSport BC and KidSport, as well as various coaching & athlete development programs. At the track level, BMX Canada offers competitive local, provincial, and national programming, event management tools, and subsidized programs for athletes & coaches through the BC BMX Development group, a volunteer-driven community group focused on supporting the development of BMX racing in the province.

The new partnership is also a huge step forward in supporting BC’s growing number of developing riders who have their sights set on Provincial and National teams by providing them with access to enhanced training opportunities and resources to help them progress through a structured pathway at local, provincial, and national levels of competition.

The partnership is being introduced at the start of a new Olympic cycle, with BMX set to be featured at the 2028 Los Angeles Games – 20 years after the sport made its debut at the 2008 Beijing Games. This is an exciting time for BMX, as advancements in racing and educational technology are making the sport more valuable and accessible than ever before.

Through this partnership, Cycling BC has become a provincial licensee of the USA BMX Instructor Education Program, a comprehensive on-demand eLearning resource that will support new instructors and coaches at BMX tracks across the province. These resources will enable Cycling BC to facilitate coach education sessions tailored to the learning and logistical needs of stakeholders, as well as provide helpful guides for both new and experienced clubs.

“When BMX Canada approached Cycling BC to harmonize the BMX community and explore ways to bring more athletes and clubs together, our team was excited about the potential,” says Ben Chaddock, Affiliation Lead at Cycling BC. “We are thrilled to announce this innovative partnership and look forward to further developing our collaboration in the build-up to the 2028 Olympic Games.”

Additionally, Cycling BC is offering BMX Canada members the opportunity to compete in the UCI Challenge categories at the Cycling BC Provincial Championships using a Single-Event License, which typically isn’t permitted at provincial championship events. This special exemption aims to reduce financial and administrative barriers, making the Provincial BMX Championships more accessible and rewarding for all BMX racers in British Columbia.

"This collaboration brings together two great organizations, joining forces to provide enhanced support and guidance that will significantly benefit riders and clubs," says Kevin O’Brien, Director of Sport Development for BMX Canada. "Through this new partnership, we are setting BC up for success by building a strong foundation at the grassroots level while elevating our future stars”.

For existing BMX Canada clubs, Kevin O’Brien will reach out to discuss the partnership in more detail, and in the meantime, tracks can view more information on the Cycling BC website in a dedicated section at cyclingbc.net.

For existing Cycling BC clubs and members, they are invited to a Cycling BC Virtual Town Hall on Monday, July 28th, from 5:15 pm to 6:00 pm (Google Meet link or dial: ‪(CA) +1 587-688-8632, PIN: ‪164 927 145#) to learn more about this exciting partnership.
