San Antonio, Texas — Bernie Anderson, a trailblazer in the world of bicycle motocross (BMX) and a guiding force behind the growth of USA BMX (formerly known as the American Bicycle Association), passed away on October 14th, surrounded by family at his home in San Antonio, Texas. He was 93.

Born in Kentuck, West Virginia, in 1932, Bernie Anderson was one of nine kids. Eventually, he made his way to Texas, chasing the American dream. Unknowingly, he would become a cornerstone in the fledgling community of a new sport called Bicycle Motocross (BMX). Becoming the track operator of Lonestar BMX in San Antonio, in order to provide a place for his two sons to compete, Bernie would later found his own BMX brand - Rebel Racing. Then, in 1985, when the opportunity arose, Bernie purchased the Arizona-based sanctioning body, ABA (American Bicycle Association). In the decades since, he helped elevate the sport from grassroots tracks to a respected international discipline — one that would eventually become an Olympic event.

Anderson’s leadership helped shape BMX into a structured and professionally recognized family sport. Early on, he recognized a need to honor the achievements of BMX pioneers and formed the National BMX Hall of Fame in 1985, which just celebrated its 40th Anniversary.

In 2007, Anderson was inducted into the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame in recognition of his lifelong dedication to the sport and his innovative promotion of BMX racing.

One year later, Bernie was inducted into the National BMX Hall of Fame.

Beyond his professional achievements, Bernie was known for his generosity, his tenacious work ethic, and his unwavering belief in the power of community. Countless riders owe their start to his vision and support.

He is preceded in death by daughter Kay Melvin and survived by his wife Edson, sons Bernard Allen ("BA") and Bernard Ray ("BR"), daughters Debbie Hominick and Karen Thompson, and his sister Maxine.
