My first job was delivering the news paper, the Herold Examiner, door to door daily. This was in 1972 I was 14 years old. When I came home from school a bundle of news papers would be in the driveway. I had to fold each news paper and put a rubber band around it or put in a plastic bag if it was raining. Then I had a large canvas bag, that went over the handle bars of my bike, that I would put the news papers in to carry them door to door. Sunday the news paper was twice the size of the daily paper and it came early in the morning and needed to be delivered right away. I always did the best job I could. I always "porched" the paper. I made sure it landed on the porch when I would throw it. This was important because at the end of the month I had to go door to door and collect the money. This was when I would get a tip, extra money, from the customer for doing a good job. Christmas time was the best tips. I did this for a year and then I got a job as a Box Boy at a small store near my house. That didn't last long when a customer ratted me out to the manager of the store for working on a friends car in the parking lot. It was easy to find a job back in those days so I got a job at a full service Mobil gas station. Gas was 75 cents a gallon at that time. I worked 6 days a week. I had 2 periods of work experience in high school because I worked full time. I saved up a lot of money by my 16th birthday so I could buy a car but I failed my driving test, twice, I even hit a another car while taking the test, instant fail. So I decided to buy a brand new 1974 Honda CR 125 Elsonore intsead. $705 cash out the door. This was newest and fastest dirt bike on the market. I got my AME racing licence and started racing my Honda Elsonore at Indian Dunes that was in Castaic Calif.
